A cultural landscape in transition The Danish countryside is a cultural landscape. Fields and meadows, heaths and commons, moors and forests all form a unity, where production of foodstuffs and wood takes place alongside protection of natural values, outdoor recreation and aesthetic considerations. Urban developments such as housing and business take up a still larger proportion of the landscape. Moreover, the landscape provides us with the basic essentials of drinking water and fresh air. Landscape management is the art of synthesising the manifold uses, which takes place in the landscape, and it requires knowledge about nature, ecology and production, careful planning and co-operation between authorities, owners and users of the land.
Forest & Landscape Denmark carries out research on land use planning, public and private management of the landscape, preservation of rural amenities and rural plants. Other subjects for research are spatial planning methods and geografic information systems.
